Random stalling problem & other gremlin related issues

So, my '86 635 has been off the road since the end of 2013, due to a non-starting issue & loss of power when overtaking, that seemed to be beyond the ken of the various groups of clowns that looked at her! Anyway, eventually a replacement ECU sorted those particular problems. I've only ac...

Hi Paul, Aye, car still in workshop, where it's been for months! My mind has been elsewhere, to say the least. It's almost become something of a showpiece there. Mechanics love it & keep adding new parts when they find them, just for the sake of it as far as I can tell... which is nice. Free dry...

ECU Wanted UK

Hi, I'm after a replacement ECU for my manual '86 635.

Part no. 0261 2000 61

There's another no. scribbled down on the note my mechanic gave me:

Cheers, Iain

Hmm... I've noticed a strong smell of fuel when I try & start her up I thought that was a bit odd. A new set of HT leads has just arrived in the mail, so I can eliminate that possibility later. Still waiting for the spark plugs. I had a car that had a bad CSI - Ralph I must say that made me chuc...

Hi Ralph, She cranks very quickly on the key (always been a fast starter). I think I have a mental block concerning stuff like the ECU :-? , I must admit that never occurred to me. Would that still be a likely problem, given that she'll start straight away with the no.5 plug removed? I was also wond...

Okay, genuine thanks due this time! Going forward in time somewhat, This is where I am; I swapped the relays over from the M6, it made no difference ( a healthy "click" when the ignition was switched on. I pulled the fuel hose from the back of the engine, turned the key & fuel s...

Help needed! '86 635 runs, but will not start on key?

I've been using my 635 as my daily driver with no problems. A couple of days ago, I was about to head back from a 3 mile trip. She turned over but wouldn't start. I waited a few seconds, tried again & she fired up, no problem. I did the same journey yesterday. She wouldn't fire up at first (from...

U.K. - Selling my 5-speed '86 635. How much is it worth?

Hi all, I've been agonising over this for ages! I need to sell one of my coupes. I was going to sell the M6, as she needs quite a bit of work, but I keep having to spend ?? on other things & haven't quite been able to afford it. The 635's the tidier of the two & has been pretty well looked a...

Oil Pan part no. for UK '86 635?

My sump pan needs replacing due to a large split. I bought one that allegedly will fit the six, part no. 1708 347 225. I've tried to check it against "realoem.com"s listings. It shows the blow-up of the parts, but doesn't give any part nos. for some reason. Worried that it maybe an e34 par...

Oil in gearbox is creamy-white?

Not on the BMWs actually, on the 5-speed ZF 'box in the old Aston. I assume this is a BAD THING? This is with the gearbox cold by the way. My only experience of "white" oil is if it mixes with water (head gasket etc.). I can't see any way of that happening in a gearbox though. Weird, I jus...

I had a petrol one for a while. Couldn't even hit 30 mpg with it! My 25 year old 635 is more economical. I don't know how you're breaking 30 mpg in a 6. That would be ludicrous for me. On a long distance drive on a boring duel-carriageway, I've had 30-33 mpg in the 635. Maybe the combination of lig...

Brucey, a flat battery was my first thought as well, so I whipped it out straightaway & put it on to charge. The spare battery I've got is a bit old now, but was charged up a few weeks back. I just thought both batteries being flat was unlikely...but not impossible of course. I'll give my good b...

That's a nice, shiny engine Ron, is that your living room centrepiece?! Anyway, she's on an '88 plate, but I think she's actually an '86 model. I thought that's where the s/m was, I just can't get to it. Especially with my Dads' selection of Imperial & Whitworth spanners, with the car bloc...

So I've been fiddling for an hour or so with no result. The earth for the battery's fine. I've tried swapping the starter relay for the horn, no difference. Incidentaly, I tried starting without the relay in at all, she still tries to turn over, that doesn't seem right? I've tried to give the starte...

Just driven 40 miles to take my Dad into hospital. I'm at his house & my M635 won't start all of a sudden! I turn the key & all the systems come on line. Try turning her over & everything cuts out, the starter tries turning but it's like the battery's flat (I carry a spare, charged batte...
