So, while the 6er is up on jack stands, I'm taking the opportunity to take care of some maintenance underneath, replacing the reverse light switch being one of the tasks that needed to be performed
Well, what a PITA that job is, had to remove the clutch slave cylinder to install the replacement
But one thing that I noticed was that the drain plugs for both the tranny and diff have magnets built into them, but the oil drain plug doesn't
I replaced mine with a magnetic version eons ago, but the question that comes to mind is why BMW didn't use a magnet on the oil drain plug, but did in other locations
My guess is that while BMW makes the engines (shit, our middle name is motor ) but doesn't make the transmissions or differentials, Getrag comes to mind in the case of the tranny, not sure who makes the diffs
Thinking that these manufacturers were smart enough to use them, but BMW was not
I know, hard to believe, curious what you guys think

Re: Magnetic drain plugs
Filtration and more frequent changes can support the lack of a magnetic drain plug. I would still suggest it though I don’t have it in any of my vehicles (YET). They are not cheap and I am.

Re: Magnetic drain plugs
I use magnets on the drain plugs from an old hard drive.

Re: Magnetic drain plugs
I have them in all six of my BMW 's.
Can't hurt.
Saw someone stuck few magnets around outside of pan. That should work too I'd assume.
After I saw that put a couple around my power steering canister. Can't hurt

Re: Magnetic drain plugs
Like the above, it's rare earth magnets from hard drive for me - including one in the PS reservoir.
