M635 Wizard Radiator

Post by passta »

Looking to replace the radiator on my 85 M635.

I have heard good things about Wizard, and read a few posts I could find that seem to reference these installed and working in an M635, as well as M5/M6.

http://www.bigcoupe.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18127
https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/show ... m-radiator

The posts are old and some of the links to Wizard are dead, but looking at their site now, I see an option for an 87-88 M6 and 88 M5, as well as pretty much any E24, everything except the M635....

https://wizardcooling.com/1987-88-bmw-e ... -radiator/.

I called Wizard and told them what I had and they suggested I look around for similar installation's on M635, which while I have found the references above, and various people who have M635's with Wizard's installed, not sure if the one on their site present day, is correct. It looks correct from the pictures, at least the hoses and sensors all line up, but the engine in the pic's on there site is an S38 I believe.

Are these radiators interchangeable so that they will also work on the M635 with M88?

Thanks!

According to the link in my original post, my year M635 isn’t listed, and all the pictures show an s38 vs I have M88. I think it will fit based off what I have read and seen, but was hoping somebody with an M88 who bought one could confirm.

My recollection is that they have no problem with customization, I know I added a drain cock to mine and they sent me a drawing with a lot of details to confirm. I guess I am suggesting get a drawing and compare it to your existing dimensions. I can tell you the fit was very tight between the distributor and the radiator. I was very careful during the install not to bang up any of the fins on the new unit.

I can't answer your q re fitting an M88 but concur with John's comments. They supplied mine without the temp switch bosses (as requested) since I have a single pusher fan run via the ECU. The radiators are very well made and deeper in the core so provide better cooling, but will be closer to your clutch fan.

Got the Wizard radiator installed yesterday. Very solid build and quality. It definitely is thicker than stock, so a couple things I noticed, and this may be due to this being advertised for 87-88 M6 and 88 M5 vs the 1985 M635 M88/3 which I have. One, my fan shroud was curved/bowed on the pass side, and with the Wizard when I reinstalled the shroud, it was rubbing on the belt for the AC condenser, so I left the shroud out for now while I try to either reshape it, or order a replacement, either way it should fit. Second, put the fan clutch back on first, before you install the radiator. There was not enough room, at least for me, to be able to put that back on with the radiator installed. I didn't figure this out till after I had the radiator and all the hoses, sensors, etc, all tightened back up, but at least lucky for me, before I filled it back up with coolant. So I took it back out, put fan clutch on, and then reinstalled, sidetracked me for 10 minutes, so no big deal. My only concern is if I have to replace or do anything to the fan clutch, I'll have to remove the radiator.
