Recaro Seat Tightness

Post by G03rt2 »

Hi everyone. More questions from a new member.
I posted a video with the link below showing my question. Basically, both the driver and passenger seat do this same thing, and I'm wondering if it's normal, or if I should be looking into it.

I have a couple pairs, and they all do this to some degree, but some are worse than others.

I don't think they should move that much.
Seems to me that you have excessive play on the release cam. Loose assembly.

It's on the list... For next winter. I don't want to tear down my seats so close to Wisconsin driving season. (Wishful thinking)

The realoem picture is for BMW sports seats - the Recaros use different parts and, yes, mine have the same problem and it's been on my "to-do" list for years now! It's almost worth having a passenger in the car to quieten the rattling!

Maybe some bungie cords wrapped around the headrest and attached to a duct taped anchor point in the backseat? That would be a solution that would make any 1980's German engineer proud.

I've had several pairs of Recaros apart working on various issues. I've found they all do that to some degree. I've spoken to Dave at Aardvark and once the hinge gets worn internally there is really no fix for it. Hes looked into having more hinges made but never did it. I've also found that the two large screws that secure the seatback to the hinge are almost always loose and need snugging up. You just need to remove the adjusting knob and the hinge cover plate to access the screws. Looking at that video it looks like the seatback is loose from the hinge so tightening up the screws will help. ( I think) Its worth a try

Thank you for that reply. I'll let you know if tightening up those screws helps at all.

Just as an update, like usual I couldn't just let this go. I took the seats out out of the car to treat with leatherique and pulled the side covers off. The hinge bolts were loose so I felt good about tightening those up, but it didn't help the issue. So that's as far as I go... For now..

How do you get inside them to repair the seat back release cable?
They are ALWAYS rustier than you thought!!!!!!

I'm also curious! As I have a set that needs the tilt cable fixed but I don't want to pull off the leather!

Ron , Tom. I’ve fixed a couple with snapped cables and its really pretty simple. Aardvaac sells a kit which is just some thin gauge aircraft cable and a ferrule. With not much more work one could probably feed a whole new length of cable up to the latch thing. I’m on a beach in Mexico right now sipping Cervesa so I’ll try to look at one of my seats when I get home. I’ve found the Recaros and sport seats to be complicated and time consuming to fiddle with but once you have it apart they are very well designed made to be worked on and repaired. Sore fingers are part of the exercise
