E24 with a V8 under the Hood? Why not...

Post by Sharknose »

Yesterday I was browsing through an English Illustrated and saw an E24 Evolution with a 4.4 liter V8 in it! =D> Guess this is my next upgrade. :-k

I did not buy the magazine, but took some photos...just for grins. Here are the photos for the interested crowd...

Yes, yes, agreed, the photos are large, but I wanted to make sure you could read the text :shock:

I wonder if Maxim is at that Riga-based restoration shop that posts on Big Coupe?

Looks a very nice conversion. The m60 v8 is a nice smooth engine. The rev nice to 7k and a perfect upgrade engine to the e24.

the blurb says it was a 628 originally, but were there any 'world bumper' 628s? I'm not sure I've ever seen one? It is clearly a post 6/87 shell... it is a shame that so many of the bumper parts are still a bit wonky, it lets the finish of the car down somewhat.

I wonder if it is any lighter than an M635CSi? It ought to be for two reasons;

1) the V8 engine should be lighter and

2) if not it is a pointless car; no faster than something you could buy anyway for about the same money.

BTW BMW made a V12 engine E24 when they were developing the 8er.

cheers

I didn't think there were any world bumper 628's either, but it could be an earlier 628 with world bumpers swapped on.

I am pretty sure it is a late shell (at least in part) because pre 6/87 Euro cars (with chrome bumpers) have a different rear panel.

Regardless of the bumpers that are actually fitted to the car you can easily tell the difference because the earlier shells won't accept a deep rear number plate; the part between the bumper and the number plate is different (higher between the lights), like this;

It is a 635 first registered 06/88 according to DVLA.

That engine must have been a real pain to shoe-horn in :-k

I totally agree with Brucey. Personally I much prefer the overall look of the chrome bumper cars.

The V12 E24 sounds very interesting - anybody know more?

there is a picture in Jeremy Walton's book. I think there are a few home-brewed versions out there too. A little 'E24 V12' google action shows a fair bit.

Yas it's an interesting swap compared to the m635csi. The v8s seem to have a little more torque. And the 286bhp seemed to be understated prob for German tax issues. A new chip does wonders for this engine and easily pushes it above 300bhp and with a manual and lighter single mass flywheel they rev nicely to 7000rpm. The other side benifit is they are a pretty efficient engine so it a light weight shell they would be pretty good on fuel

The v12 would be an interesting proposition in the e24 body also but may be heavier proposition. I really like the swap. Somethin different and still Bmw.

The M60/b44 engine weighs a little more than the M30 engine at 220kg according to the Bmw engine book I have. The M30 engine weighs 212kg and the M88 215kg. The M60/b40 engine only weighs 210kg!

I'm guessing these weights

are without ancillaries and yours are 'with' perhaps?

It is all a bit confusing!

Well, now I've learned something: I knew there was something different about the rear of the earlier and later cars; it's obvious when it's pointed out!

Cheers,

...and, I bought a highline dash from Riga a few years back, wondering why a rhd dash would be for sale there! I wonder if it's from the same car.
