New headlights

Post by baders »

Has anyone tried these on the dipped/mains ? Will they fit OK ? Seem to have correct pattern for RHD and pass MOT.

Thanks for the post - I bought a pair straight away. A steal at the price and if they don't fit one of my E24s, I'm sure they'll fit another of my cars!

You need to check that the 3-point fixings are the same as you have currently (which are unique to the E24). A photo of the rear of the unit (not shown in the listing) would help to determine the fixing points.
They are ALWAYS rustier than you thought!!!!!!

Thanks Ron. I've sent a question to the seller and will report back.

This is the reply I got so far;
Good Morning,

I'm afraid that we have not got these lights listed for that vehicle so we cannot 100% guarantee that this item will fit. You would be more than welcome to purchase and try the lights, and if they are no good, then you can return for a refund (at your own cost)

Kind Regards

Milly
I have replied asking for a photo of the rear and mountings. I may just order them anyways considering the above, though postage is 15GBP.

These will NOT fit because:-

1 The pics show all units are identical.
2 Main and Dip are different fixings and are also "handed".
3 No sidelight in the dipped unit.
4 UK (and I assume Oz) use H1s not H4s.

HTH.
They are ALWAYS rustier than you thought!!!!!!

Thanks Ron, yes, I'm aware of that. Just researching you might say for a better solution and I've no problems adapting what is there if need be. All 4 headlights on the 6 are sub par (cracked and dulled) so looking for an upgrade. I do want to make sure the vehicle complies as well.

Still searching for a solution here. What about these "Cibies" ? (for high beams);

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-Cibie-5- ... 4cfa308e05

UK seller, so would expect them to be RHD. Not cheap.

There is no difference between RHD and LHD on the high beam lamps. The Cibie lamps are far superior to the others mentioned in this thread.

Well, they arrived and I could have got them to fit with a little fettling of the headlamp bowls. However, I didn't bother as their quality is absolute crap! I would imagine they are manufactured in a sweat-shop in India or China. The "reflectors" hardly do that at all. The plating is of very poor quality and the backing is rough.

I have just opened an ebay complaint (something I have never done before), so I'm waiting to see if I can get a refund. The moral of the story is .... you get what you pay for. I should have known better :x

You can still get the original lights and they are perfectly ok with upgraded bulbs in my opinion. In fact they are off the scale on light box meter.

Like Ron has pointed out though they have specific fixings that would be difficult to mess about with. You will however need spare adjuster bushes. Described as rubber put hard plastic and a lot more brittle than they should be.

Rubber bushing 05/1982 06/1987 63121369833 $2.34

I've also covered my lights in 3m stoneguard film which will keep the lens intact if hit by stones, which would otherwise result in the lens completely smashing apart.

Also, to get rid of the milky effect that discolours the inside of the lenses a Hella rep recommended rinsing the insides with methylated spirits, followed by water. I tried this on my original set with about 80% success. Not perfect but markedly better.

Thanks guys. Pod, thanks for being the "guinea pig" in this. I do hope you get restitution as there is no excuse for poor workmanship.

Chris. I have searched for original lights but come up blank for RHD. My poor searching skills aside, can you tell us the source ?

I replaced all four plus the front fogs a couple years ago and recently the right side low beam was smashed by a stone.

Sourced all here: http://eshop.original-teile.de/. Web site not as flash as some - have to be sure of your part numbers (those you posted are same as mine), but otherwise reliable. Note their shipping breaks so pays to fill up a box for same rate. Good for euro or RHD specific.

Thanks Chris. That is some.................errrrrr, website :shock:

I have been in touch with Daniel Stern, he of the lighting guru kind. I need to find out some details about which lights I actually have (2000kms away at work again), but DS has some interesting options, one LED;
The best-bar-none headlamp that can be made to fit (starting
with the standard-fit bracketry) is this full-LED type made
in America by JW Speaker:
http://www.jwspeaker.com/products/headl ... uct=500027

They are available in ECE/LH-traffic, which complies with
the ADRs and is the variant you'd need. They are quite
costly, but absolutely phenomenal.

Cheers DS
I am waiting on a price, but I think I better be sitting down :mrgreen:

I have several other enquiries out there on original replacement units and will report what I find.

Those have been readily available for a few years now. I've got a set of the 7" in a box I'm planning on installing in my '92 Alfa Spider. If you shop around, cost is around $700/pr, regardless of the model you need.

hanks Chris. That is some.................errrrrr, website Shocked
Just plug the part number in the search box and you get this. If in German hit the union jack. Have used them a number of times - no issues.
