What did you do to your E24 today?

Post by rhanley 635csi89 »

Progress, assembly of freshly painted valance and bumper.  New rubber purchased as old rubber has disappeared from the paint shop, center rubber NLA.  Purchased several center pieces off of ebay, none are in great shape.  I have a BMW license plate filler which I purchased some five years ago.
Bumper has been polished and ceramic coated, there are a few scratches, the bumper may have to be redone. Hoping scratches won't be noticed when the car is completed.
Car should be completed soon, it's been sooooooooo long! ](*,)

Resolved a non start problem I've had for a month now . After much head scratching and fault finding aplenty, issue was traced to an open circuit speed sensor . In the journey I removed an old ,but expensive and well fitted, alarm /immobiliser, found the main relay coil open circuit and learned a great deal about the Motronic basic system in my series one car .
Point to remember is that the speed sensor will prevent the car from starting , some sources suggest that it will cause rough running .

Much gratitude is given to Ron and Rob ( wattsmonkey ), Chris ( jps635 ) and Justin ( Beaker ) whose help in supplying parts ,support , diagrams and offers of ecu for me to try was enormous.
Thanks Lads .
Great site this ...... =D>

Bumper/valance/rubbers assembled and installed on the car. The shop painted the used licence plate center rubber to clean it up. Does anyone know of a better matching black paint that would match/blend with the color of the factory front bumper rubber? Or a pristine license plate center rubber. It's NLA, my car is a 1989.
Thanks, Roger

After a very long time to....

a) Get around to doing it.
b) Identifying the correct parts.
c) Waiting an eternity for parts to land in UK
d) Working out how everything goes back together correctly after making a mistake on my plumbing and electric diagrams.

.... I FINALLY completed the refurbishment of my Headlamp Wash Wipe system. Everything squirts and wipes exactly as it once did many years ago. I'm chuffed to bits.

Huge thanks to Brucey for his original "Pesky Squirters" thread (get well soon fella) and also to forum member "K1W1" for helping me identify the wash pumps required.

They might be NLA from BMW but freely available for a 1986 Porsche 944, same VDO part!!!!

Working in the office today, got an emergency call and had to deliver a part for a tug boat and do a minor repair. It was much quicker to take the 6 rather than run to the house for the service van. Their mechanic was there if I needed any tools. Headed 45 min north on the interstate (which was just flying today)

Met the mechanic and followed him to the job site, a mile and a half or so down a gravel utility easement. Doubt there has ever been a lowered BMW on a remote high voltage power line project.

Pumped up the tyres and took the M635 out for a spin yesterday - everything works including the AC and it still looks stunning - I've also ordered a load of hoses for a coolant system refresh - the thermostat and housing are NLA so I will have to go aftermarket.

Coolant system refeshed as much as I could reach - I left the thermostat alone (if it ain't broke, don't fix it) and then ordered a new afm to plenum hose, underbonnet trim and an E30 M3 throttle cable for just in case.

Well, the old gal got a new battery. Went to run some errands yesterday Climbed in and turned the key, to nothing. Really, nothing, no life at all. Broke out the volt meter, and the dash was right, dead, half a volt. Charger pressed into service and the errands got run in the service van.

Adulting in the last month has gotten in the way of 6er attention. Arranged the errands in such a way to drive the car in the afternoon. What? Efficiency? Ha, a cruise in the car is more important.

On my return after an hour or so on the road with the car and a start or two out comes the tester. The 775 CCA battery tested at 145. Not too bad, I reckon, for a battery installed in Jan '15 in the Florida heat. My battery vendor only had a 2nd to fit. Thanks to the panicdemic their inventory is sad. I'm not too concerned about a cosmetic flaw in the case.

Anyone in, at minimum the eastern US, possibly further afield, should look for Deka batteries from East Penn Mfg. I have used their batteries whenever possible for the last 30 years. They offer a great product, long lived and no issues in my experience. Being a manufacturer they are labeled under many familiar names. I have seen: BMW, Duracell, NAPA, West Marine and more in their warehouse. My customers get the Deka branded batteries, but mine usually die on Sunday, so I get theirs under another label.

Hopefully I will be able to report not needing a new battery until 2027 or so rolls around.

I bought a Harbor Freight random orbital polisher and went about making a scratched and pitted at least shine! In serious need of a complete repaint, but at least now it's shiny.

Used the following:

Griots black foam finishing pad
Griots boss finishing sealant

Also used Chemical Guys C4 Clear Cut and P4 Precision polish for some bad scratches

Finished with Griots 3 in 1 Ceramic Wax

Turned out ok, but I think I may have done better with the scratches if I had a more aggressive pad. Or maybe just more experience...

Thanks!

Couple other items I tried.

Chemical Guys light metal polish
Used on the bumpers - looking to get rid of the mottled oxidation look. Didn't really help much.

Chemical Guys tire and trim gel
Used on the spoiler that was very tired looking. Worked quite well - nice black even appearance (for a really old beat up spoiler).
Used on the b pillar "gills" that were pretty dull. Worked well here.
Used on the trim around the side glass. Just ok.

We'll see about durability/longevity.

Should have taken before/after pics...

I use Autoglym bumper & trim gel for the plastic parts, work very well too, deep black instead of faded grey.

Scott, be aware that the bumpers are clear anodized, and only chemically stripping or heavy mechanical polishing will get through that coating. Polishing with normal compounds will only buff the anodizing but not get rid of the cloudiness.

Thanks for the reminder Ken. When I was talking to the Chemical Guys retailer he suggested this product and did a small portion of the bumper with it. I cautioned him with the same information and he said it was good for the clear as well as bare metal. Sounded a little shaky to me, but I thought I'd try it (without too much pressure to prevent going through the clear). Well, didn't work (per your comment). Alas no silver bullet...

I did have an additional learning moment. Those of you more experienced at detailing probably would have handled this better. As I mentioned I finished the body with Griots 3 in 1 Ceramic Wax. While putting a second coat on the roof I had a short brain fade and while using the microfiber towel to buff/dry the wax I set the bottle down on the roof. Well, that portion of the roof is almost horizontal. Almost. The bottle slid down the rear window over the trunk/spoiler and hit the garage door knocking the lid off in the process. Lost about a 1/3 of the bottle. That stuff is really slippery.

On the plus side a small portion of the inside of my garage door is really shiny.

Thanks to Rod Paine and his terrific website I discovered my 6er was missing a heat shield for the RH upper control arm bushing. Until I read through this page, I hadn't been aware such an item existed, but apparently the factory began installing them after a certain date:

https://www.mye28.com/tech/rods_pages/id18.html

The heat shield is Item #19:
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpa ... Id=31_0019

I didn't see any evidence of my car ever having one from the factory. The mounting holes in the frame were there, but no shield. I'm glad to discover this so soon after investing/installing new Lemforder UCAs with heavy-duty Korman bushings. I also ordered the two self-tapping screws along with the shield. It's a simple, 5-minute installation.

My 635CSi lives outside but washed and polished and with a cover over it. I have had an empty garage for a few weeks while my E38 gets resprayed but due to laziness/absent-mindedness/stupidity I didn't get around to popping the 635 in there. I went away overnight and due to the storms I returned to find my 635 but no car cover - oh well, thought I, that will trigger me into putting it into the garage, before I have a quick search of the neighbours gardens for the cover.

I had to wash my E39 daily driver and get it out of the way and then flashed up the 635, ran it up to temp, a few short drives up and down our road and then parked it up in the garage. I was just ready to lock up and commence the cover search when my neighbour stopped as he was driving past - 'You haven't seen a 16ft long grey car cover about have you?' I enquired - 'Indeed I have.' he said, and explained he saw it blowing about the day before and managed to catch it before it set off to who knows where as a large grey kite.

c£200 car cover saved so a nice bottle of red was given as a gift. Good neighbours, priceless.

Having just had my auto box removed and replaced with a newly refurbished manual Getrag gearbox, courtesy of Neil at AllGears, Worksop, I have now realised how ineffective the standard brakes are.

As a consequence I have been researching alternative types of calipers and associated hardware.

Spoke with Rich at FritzBits and we came to the conclusion that the only option was E38 728i Sport calipers, E28Goodies adaptors, E38 Discs, and finally a 750i brake master cylinder. Finally a set of HEL braided hoses.

So spent the day sourcing and ordering all this equipment !

Additionally installed a double USB socket discreetly in the glove box so I can charge phone etc. instead of having yards of wiring hanging out of cigarette lighter.

By the way refitting the glove box to the glove box hinge was one of the hardest jobs I have done on this car !!! A nightmare !!!
