So I'm doing well needed brakes on the cabrio...

Post by GRNSHRK »

Doods, you are not gonna believe this :-({|=

The rear rotors are so rusted on, using a puller (yes, I tried WD-40, etc. ) the right hand side popped off after a huge amount of effort :-"

Well, the left hand side is not playing fair whatsoever [-X

At first I thought my puller broke, but to my surprise, it was the rotor itself, that threw in the towel

No friggin' way, are you've got to kidding me =;

Pic attached, it's still soaking, and will try again manana [-o<

Seriously thinking about slamming it with a sledge hammer [-(

Do you have a propane torch, or better yet a MAPP torch? Heat the hub, just hot but not enough to discolor the metal or cause the penetrating fluid to flame up. Remove the heat and blast the joint with whatever penetrating fluid you want (if you haven't tried AeroKroil I highly recommend it). Every few minutes as the hub cools blast it again. The idea is the fluid is pulled into the joint as it cools. Leave it for a few hours/over night, then try pulling the rotor. Worked for me.

By the way, the rotor is scrap. Whack it with whatever blunt object you want.

You don't mention anything about ensuring the handbrake is fully released, or, if so, whether the disc will rotate?

And if the handbrake assembly seems to be free, have you tried further releasing with a screwdriver through the inspection hole (ie in case there is a lip that the brake shoe is catching on.

Ken, good idea, I do have propane but not MAPP, which I believe is hotter than propane :-k

Gonna see if I can get my sledge hammer behind it where the caliper bolts up [-o<

Phil, good point but I've done enough brake jobs to know to release the parking brake \:D/

I've just never seen a rotor break like that

Well, overnight soaking worked, that and one swift whack with a 10 pound sledge hammer and she popped right off

I realize that this isn't 6er content, but I am really pleased with the look of the end results and can't wait to finish the fronts and take the cabrio out for a test drive [-o<

After proper breaking in of the pads and rotors, of course \:D/

Next time try 50/50 mixture of ATF/acetone...
Performs and formally tests best (by measuring force/torque necessary for removal) vs. PB, liquid Wrench, Kroil, etc, after both 1 and 24 hours...Also cheapest.
WD40 bottom of the list.

Wow, interesting info =D>

I actually do have an ancient can of liquid wrench, kinda forgot about that stuff :-k

Well, I still have to do the fronts, sounds like time for an experiment \:D/

The trick with the ATF/Acetone mix is to mix only what's needed at a time. Unless you have an extremely airtight container to store the mix, the Acetone will evaporate out of the mix. I'm not sure of the origins of that mix, but the John Deere antique collectors bunch recommended it to me when I was restoring an old JD. It works quite well, but isn't a stable compound such as Kroil and Liquid Wrench.

Wow Bobbo, that must have been quite a bang when the rotor let go. I've actually had a few nasty stuck on rotors recently as well. Doing my brakes on my Toyota Tundra they were stuck on good. One of them I used a 12 lb sledge to bash it off. The brakes, wheels etc look really good.
