Under hood upgrades, finally...

Post by GRNSHRK »

Yes gents, finally getting to some car projects, and the 6er was first on the list, as if

Enhancements include a new hood pad, thanks to Classic 9 Leather Shop, several parts powder coated, renewal of the windshield wiper system and lots of new hardware =D>

Here's a few pix, 4 at a time, as usual :-"

Powder coated parts, and there was no way that some of this was going back together with 40 year old hardware [-X

Removing the old glue, well, let me start by admitting that this is the THIRD time I have done this job ](*,)

The first 2 was with that Mylar faced crap, and the only "good" thing about it is that the adhesive came off with the pads, as it was "peel and stick", not spray contact adhesive, like the Classic 9 stuff, so there was virtually nothing to remove =D>

IIRC, I had to use a variety of "mouse milk" to remove the original glue, including bot not limited to Goo Gone, paint/lacquer thinner, a plastic scraper (don't even think about using a metal one [-X ) finger nails, and lots of beer :-"

So, what's next, hmm, where do I start :-k

Think I'm done under the bonnet (hood, for you Yanks) for a while, as the next step will be a major one, as my friends in Paso Robles are in the process of sourcing me an M90 to replace my aging M30B32 [-o<

But I do plan on having the Throwing Star center covers repainted Nagaro Silver and will be adding old school Motorsport Roundels, already got one for the front, still waiting on the one for the boot lid (Rick :-? ). which will be rather easy \:D/

I still need to rewire the stereo, actually a complicated project because of the amp in the trunk, which I mounted behind the rear strut tower stress bar/battery tray combo. Removing that isn't easy and since I have new springs, I would replace them at the same time. But, before I replace the rear springs, I need to do the fronts first, so that I can set the rear ride height correctly. So this is also a bit of a more long term project, probable when winter sets in, which is rather mild, here in northern CA :-"

That's my story for now fellas

Thanks

The brace was custom made by a guy that used to be on the board but no longer is, think I recall his name being Brent Kemi from PNW :-k

Here's a pic, and you can see that my not only should I have mounted the amp in front of the brace, but the wiring is a real clusterfuck :-({|=

Maybe do an internet search for his name :-?

I really do like the brace, well made and I also like the fact that the battery is mounted on the right hand side, to offset the driver's fat ass #-o

That is a really nice rear brace and your under-hood work looks great. Was the front strut tower brace also custom made? I really like the way the end pieces fit the strut towers.

Cheers, Gregg

Thanks Gregg, really appreciate it =D>

The front brace was from BMP Design, alas they have gone the way of the dodo as well :(

Those end pieces could use some refinishing as well, just not sure what to do with them yet, as they appear to have been chromed, back in the day :-?

Thinking of powder coating them as well, provided I can get something as shiny as chrome [-o<

Hey looking good there Bobbo. Good idea powdercoating the air filter box, I tried to repaint mine and its already starting to crumble a bit. What are the black circular items there? I dont recognize them. Its all looking very sharp.

Thanks Dave, powder coating is the way to go =D>

All of those "black circular items" are for the wiper system, they all stack up around the spindles that pop up from the wiper linkage mechanism :-"

Everything is still available, if you are interested in refurbishing yours =D>

Aah, Right ok. I haven't been into that area of the car so didn't recognize those. I suppose I should put that on the list before it all goes NLA . I've read all that can become a problem. Keep up the good work and the posts coming :D

Thanks rusty, I hope NEVER to have to that task again ](*,)

Jlc, rusty posted the linky for ya, highly recommended and far better quality than I've seen out there =D>

On a side note, alignment is tricky as you have very little time, once you spray the contact cement adhesive and it's a one shot deal :-"

And the center section does take 2 people, if only to hold up one side while you align the other :-k

Not a difficult part of the task however, as I had the missus help me do mine \:D/

Also "fun" is applying the Roundel in the center, should you decide to add that as well (extra cost and does not come with the hood pad set unless you request it) as it's a sort of "transfer" that requires water and a squeegee to apply :-?

Think I nailed it, however 8)

Post update:

The adhesive that I used eventually gave in, probably due to heat, but who knows :-?

So after discussing this issue with another board member (Tommy) we both decided to go with another 3M product, 90 high strength high temp spray contact cement [-o<

Tommy also bought the classic 9 hood pads but has yet to install them, probably because we haven't figured out the logistics of when and where we are going to do this :-({|=

Anyhoo, if/when you go this route, choose your adhesive wisely \:D/

I went through the same experience with the same padding. I used this product eventually that worked well with the original factory glue. Used about 2 quarts with a little less scraping then the other products.

https://www.autobodytoolmart.com/produc ... oup%20%231

I then used the recommended 3M glue.

https://www.amazon.com/3M-Multipurpose- ... 6885&psc=1

When that didn't hold very well I used this.

https://www.amazon.com/3M-Hi-Strength-A ... 88548&th=1

After about 6 months the padding fell off just like in your photo.

I then removed the spray glue and ordered self adhesive pads from.

https://www.wallothnesch.com/en/body-wo ... 41-17.html

That was about 4 years ago and still attached with no separation at all, much better product.
Hope this helps.

Hmm, I used the 3M 90 high strength stuff, but that doesn't sound very optimistic :-k

Well, we'll see [-o<
