Gertie Ready & M635 sale at Shannons

Post by Shipper 01 »

Firstly, Shannon's Sydney November 9 sale had an M635CSi in it. A UK import. Sold for $48,500 and to me, that's big for a Shannon's auction. Seems the 6'er is starting to go up in price. See here http://www.shannons.com.au/auctions/201 ... lZ7V3YrKUk

Secondly, Gertie is finally ready. Finally. What a haul. Nearly 18 months. So so many hurdles. Most of them the first mechanic. So much for 3 to 5 weeks.

The guys at Creative Custom Cars in Dromana Vic have been great. Really quality workmanship and weekly updates. So;

1. The S38B38 is in. Expecting 370hp plus.
2. The LSD from an e28 chassis is in. 3.45.
3. e28 rear subframe in. Lot's of work.
4. Military grade bushes all in.
5. New control arms in.
6. New 3" exhaust in.
7. 5 speed overdrive stays.
8. E28 2 dial gauge cluster in. Thanks Adam. Needed to hook the speed sensor in the e28 LSD to the cluster then to the ECU to prevent running in limp mode.
9. Cracks in floor near diff mount welded up. All stress related.
10. Bomb proof diff mount in.
11. Floor strengthened for new diff and engine.

And much much more. Doing final commissioning now with heat runs and traffic stress testing prior to me driving back from Melbourne.

Will do for sure. May even drop down with Rosie and Isaac in early Jan for a museum run. Will you be around? With work so busy I may just pick it up early Jan 2016. Will wait and see but will hit the ACT for sure.

We will do a dyno run and tune next week. A bit more stress testing in the heat to make sure temps for thermo are set correctly. Then mayhaps a 2 or 3 hour hard drive in the Melbourne heat, check again and that should be about right for commissioning.

This has nearly killed me. Never again. There! I said it. Never again.

Except for the new dash, new-ish period correct recaro's and the 6sqm of Alpina cloth I'll do the interior with. But after that!!!!!!!! You heard me!!!

Great news Josh. Would love to see some more detailed photos when you get a chance. Was there any issue with the thermostat clearing the radiator ?

Good to see it nearly over the line. If it's nearly killed you doing one project try doing 4 and a house renovation.

Nevermind things will get fixed eventually. If u need a hand sorting anything locally let me know. I have to go down to Hastings prob late next week to update my club rego in the e24.

All good at the moment Gaz. Car seems to be running fine although we need a dyno test to check we are not in 250hp limp mode but up at the 370hp business end meaning the ecu is reading the diff speed sensor.

Called Addam yesterday (BMW Wreckers) as my throttle cable is heavily worn (despite my very light foot) and my mechanic and he are liaising so as to get the right throttle cable sent from Surfers Paradise down to Dromana.

So honestly, apart from that it's just testing and tuning. All together and running.

Oh, I had Creative Custom Cars move the battery to the back like in the M635CSi only to the left side to offset the driver a little. Gives more room in the engine bay and hell, it sat out right past the left front wheel. Now in a much better position for sporty driving.

I'm in Melbourne next week Gaz but too busy to bring the car back. When I get her I'll call and we can catch up and have a yack.

So close now.

After huge issues swapping in LSD's with speed signal ports, e28 chassis gauge clusters, e28 rear subframes and all sorts of things to try and get the M5-3.8 ECU to read the speed signal and run out of limp mode we are almost there (which sounds like a fricken broken record).

Purchased speed signal simulator. Has arrived in Melbourne. Awaiting auto-electrician to hook up. Has 3 wires. One to ecu, one to battery and an earth. Hopefully it works!

There are still workmanship issues associated with the previous idiots attempt to put the engine in. Hopefully the car is back by April and I'll get Peak Performance in Sydney to go through the workmanship issues over time.

Never again. What a fricken fight. Bloody years!

I've got the sports seats to go in once she is back. I've got the Alpina cloth to redo the interior. The new dash. So close.

Nice work Josh ! My speed input simulator also arrived couple days ago. However, my BMW guru says in his experience it is unnecessary, as the Australian delivered E34 3.6s did not feature this "de-rating mode" on the 0261 200 350 ECU. I'm not convinced though and time will tell.

Nice to see it nearly finished. Just be careful to wire it correctly otherwise u can fry the ecu which would not be cool really.

Plan now to drive back either 9th or 16th of April (either the Saturday or Sunday of these weekends).

Almost ready to go. Needs tuning. Running well. Wiring and miscellaneous issues to attend to.

Ellis, just in case this is actually not false start number 65271-b, you around April?

Gertie about to leave Classic Custom Cars in Melbourne. Running well. Heading to a BMW specialist for a final fine tune and oil change prior to running back to Sydney in the coming weeks.

Just talked to the mechanic in Melbourne. He is pushing hard for this Saturday, if not then Saturday the 23rd.

He drove the car from the restorer to his workshop over 30kms so we are getting very close.

Car working well, just a list of little niggling things now.

The e28 diff needs the e28 subframe and a fair bit of work around the diff mount. My floor and transverse beam were cracked around the diff mount location.

The rear subframe will costs you $200-$400. Then you need to get it cleaned, painted and new bushes placed. There is then further fabrication work under body to get it to all fit. Your rear sway bar will also no longer fit.

Allow $1.2k to $2k to get it all done excluding the cost of an e28 LSD.

Th engine has been completely rebuilt but is generally stock. Pistons are forged and 100g lighter per piston (so around 20% lighter). Pistons are oversized for the 1st bore. Has had a little head work but stock cams. Runs race extractors and no cat. I have about 1200kms on the engine so getting close to run in.

Not yet,

Chasing a vacuum leak causing a rough idle. Timing chain cover oil leak, power steering fluid leak and replacing all four rear boots for axles. One was completely split and had thrown grease all under the car. All others are in a real bad way. I'll take a shot before the replace. The torn one has a 1 inch tear clean through.

So it smelt like a world war two war plane as I had oil, hydraulic fluid and grease all hitting hot parts and smoking away. Very keen to go a dogleg box and maybe chase a 3.64 M635 big case lsd. I'm like you Gaz and prefer the V8 instant launch feel.

FYI, the cost to make good the crap MH did (I can send you the receipts) was over $11k. Seriously!!! On his $3.5k quote. And then he stole my dogleg.

Hey Josh. I'm sure he would have sorted it if you had the time. If time is an issue unfortunately you have to pay market rates. Haha perhaps some time in the future you could sort out stuff with him. I'm sure he would be receptive.

At the end of the day looking back is unhealthy just move forward.

I'm not sure super low diff gears would be the go for the s38b38.

Cant recall exactly but 3.45 gears I think u have for memory. With a dogleg like in mine you would be spinning near 3000rpm @100kmh. It's the equiverlant of running around 4.27 diff with an overdrive box. It suits the torque less m88/3 pretty well as u can keep it on the boil through the gears but with a worked s38 it will make it a little crazy. Perhaps if you went to a standalone and spun it into the high 7000zone the dogleg would be great. If u want shorter gearing perhaps as said the 3.73 or 3.91 would be the go with the overdrive box.

Gaz,

I have to let it go. The guys broke. I can promise you that had he had any money and a known address, legal action would have already commenced.

After spending $8k at classic custom cars to fix MH's mistakes, Graeme Bell (you probably know him, in Hastings, BMW Vic car club historic register) needed to replace all of the parts that MH placed in and charged me for. That 540 radiator MH said he gave me for free. Was spilt so badly Graeme had to replace it with a brand new item. Graeme charged me $3.7k to fix the last of the dodgy install issues completed by MH. The auto electrician cost me $1.2k to fix the mess of wires around the pedals MH left. It was so bad it cost me $300 to have the car towed as Alan refused to drive it back to Dromana with all the wires around the pedals. The car was shorting and there were live exposed wires behind the steering column.

Mate he would not have sorted it had I or he had the time (you can believe his BS if you want but it is jsut that, BS). I've got his email on the build time, 3-5 weeks. At 16 months I went to Melbourne and found it at the back of an exhaust shop covered in boxes and garbage. You could just see there was a car under the crap. If I had not gone and got it I would have lost it as Jay had sold his shop, and kept my $2.5k I paid for my twin exhaust (probably because he was as pissed off with MH as I am).

So you can see why him stealing my dogleg box and wanting more money allows me to put him in the dirty filthy stinky grub thief category. I paid him every invoice he ever sent. His quote was $3.5k. I had paid him $4.9k approx when I stopped the crap. Add the above to it and including MH stealing the dogleg box, I'm around $20k into a build MH said would cost $3.5k. He may be your friend. I see him as a fraudster. Gaz you were not on the receiving end of all of the above. It was very very very very painful. The way MH treated me was pathetic, fraudulent, abhorrent, disgusting to say the least.

That aside;

I'll consider the shorter diff with the overdrive box. I don't mind sitting at 3000rpm at 100kmh. But if I can find the 3.73 or 3.91 first I might try that. I'll talk to a few guys in Sydney and see what is the best for performance. I'm still waiting for gaskets and boots to come in to finish off the little niggling issues. Then I'll dyno it and let you know how it goes.

Haha
I just got to laugh.

I'm not about to start going 2ing and froing on a public Internet forum. No doubt he has not looked after you well with time frame and organisation.

I guess you don't mention the project grew from an engine swap to much bigger as the car initially was in a poor state of condition mechanicals and electrically. Additional cost was for additional work etc. If you decide to call it a day mid project and take the car unfinished , there will always be some massive duplication of cost. I guess being impartial I can see both sides. Worlds most disorganised mechanic u have no arguments from me as for the worlds worst I disagree.

Anyway put that shit to one side it's nice to see it up and running - well aside from a few niggles.
