Wow, those look to be in pretty good shape
Were they actually old
The treads certainly look good
That is pretty funny though

Re: Proper Use for TRX tires
I just put a new set of them on my car that I got from Coker and they are a very nice Tire very comfortable and great grip. I wish people would actually keep these on the car cuz they make the car look right.
I've done a couple shows with the car and everybody congratulating me on the look and keeping it original.

Re: Proper Use for TRX tires
What are the size of the TRXs you bought?
Below TRXs are $400 a tire.. I may have the wrong size...BUT, that's $1600 + shipping and install, so close to $2k for "period correct tires"
https://www.cokertire.com/240-55vr390-michelin-trx.html
I can go to discount tire and order some 225/50 R16 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S set of 4 shipped @ $155 each $620 total, + 100 install. So at most a $1000 shipped and installed with a 45k mile warranty (if you believe in tire warranties)..
https://www.discounttiredirect.com/fitm ... esc&page=0
Or Continental or BFGs for less...
To fit my style 5 16" wheels, the e38 ones or the e39 ones or my BBS RS 16s,
It just doesn't make sense for Me to spend and extra $1000+ on Period correct lesser tires. I can use that $1000 other places that matter more.
If I didn't drive the e24 and in sat in a Collection and had ultra low miles... maybe... alot of people drive them and want a reliable user friendly tire..
I don't use bias ply white walls on my TR4 either.. I run radials..
That's why I harp on TRXs......... I don't think they need to be pushed on BAT either...

Re: Proper Use for TRX tires
I'm with you, function over form unless you're going full concours. I drive most of my oldies a lot and I'll take ride/comfort/usefulness replaceability over "looks" pretty much all the time. I don't think I'm running stock suspension or tire/rims on any of my current herd.
Re: Proper Use for TRX tires
220/55vr390 is the size. they are now listed at $330 but when I bought them last MArch they were $298. so all in with shipping and install is was about $1600 or $400/tire installed. Its alot of $ yes, but changing rims would have added more money.
Ultimately no its not the cheapest or the best performance option, but it is period correct. I think the bottlecap rims look great and dont want to change them. My car has 80k and is almost completely original, but it's not a concours car or garage queen.
So yes it is a subjective decision.
What bothers me most is when people say they are bad tires, or as you say not "user-friendly" or "reliable" and that the TRXs NEED to be replaced. We all make different decisions on where to spend our $ on our cars. TRXs arent for everybody, they are unique and expensive, but apart from that they are a very nice, reliable tire. I have put over 6000 miles on these tires since march and personally I love them. The ride is very comfortable, and they grip the road remarkably well. These were state of the art tires when they were introduced. that they required a specialty rim profile is what killed them, not because they were bad tire.
So in closing, dont hate on something just because you dont like it.
