E24 wing mirror

Post by Emmanuel M6 »

After a respray I was left with some fitting issues. I drove my car from the garage after having taken it back for 'snagging'; as I hit the motorway my nearside mirror glass fell out and was only retained by the heater wire. The male connectors were broken off. My good friend, also with a 6, removed the broken unit and managed to remove a good unit from a spare mirror. So now we have perfect male and female connectors to push together. We added gorilla glue to make it super secure. Even with the glue we haven't managed to keep it in place. Is there a specific way to do it? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks. Emmanuel M6

Gorilla Glue is very strong in many applications, but it us brittle. You need an adhesive that has some flex to it. My lifelong friend who has the body shop suggests using windshield adhesive. You'll have to tape it in place while the glue sets, but it will hold up to vibrations a lot better once it's cured.

Thank you very much for getting back. To be fair we didn't give the glue enough time to cure as I had to drive the car home. Notwithstanding, I will try the windscreen glue and let you know how I get on. Emmanuel

Hi hope you are all well. Took your advice and glued mirror glass with windscreen sealant; took it out today and it seems well glued. Thanks for your help as always. Emmanuel

Timely advice. The driver's side (LHD) mirror fell out of the mount in my 85.
