I had the same issue and I ended up putting a little rubber retainer to keep the gear from moving out of position on the shaft. It wasn’t an elegant solution, but as you know, those gears move really slow and there’s no significant force on them. It’s worked for about 6 years now.

But regarding your comment about taking apart the plastic parts, I’ve taken my instrument cluster apart more times than I can count. I know what you mean! It is important to really take your time.

So is there really no way to predict the tooth count ahead of time?

I'd rather order the parts first so I I only have to pull the dash apart once and have the car still functional in the meantime.

Correct. There were several different clusters, even within the instrument manufacturer.

Damn, ok thanks. Looks like I should just order both common gear sets ahead of time.

For any future Australians looking for Odo gears, they're available locally from BSS, shipped from Sydney.

Email them for an option to buy the kit + an extra gear if you're not sure of the tooth count in your cluster.

Placed my order today for both 17 & 19 toothed gearsets.
