My 1982 633csi

Post by MoonlightGraham »

My grandfather bought this car new in early 1983 from Wide World of Cars BMW in Spring Valley, NY (outside the city) and he owned it until the late 1990s when he sold it to my uncle (with ~60k miles on it). It has the original window sticker, bill of sale, sales brochures, service records, etc. that have been awesome to look through not to mention the great memories of riding in the backseat with grandad at the wheel when I was a boy.

Jump ahead to 2021 and I purchased the car from my uncle in January and it currently has 87k miles. It runs and drives very well but is very much a 39 year old car and has recently spent time being stored outside in New Jersey; with some rust in the rear wheel well area. She will now be garaged in North Carolina, so hopefully I can preserve her for the next generation!

I've always been a car guy, but have always owned late model cars and have focused in on surface care/detailing and less on turning wrenches - so I have a lot to learn! I am already working on a punch list of items to bring to the board for feedback and guidance!

Here are a few before and after photos (stripping wash/clay/compound/polish/synthetic wax applied by DA polisher): https://ibb.co/album/0qmhY6

Very nice, I bought my 86 in 1988 from Wide World.

Good luck and enjoy the tinkering when working on these beauties.

Thanks, all. Yes - it's Henna Red! Growing up I always described it as 'candy apple orange' - a unique and cool color for sure.

Such a great story! I love it when a car stays in the family for such a long time!

My grandfather owned many BMW's as well, among them several 3, 5 and 7 series, sadly all of them are demolished.

You may want to get to know Roger Hanley (also from NC) who is restoring his car. He likely has good info on body shops for rust, paint and other needs of aging BMWs.

Great looking car, congratulations and glad it is staying in the family. I would start with the basic maintenance stuff and start making a list of things that need replacing. Start with easy stuff until you get some confidence. BC is always here when you get in too deep!

I noticed the front side bumper covers are hanging down. I am pretty sure they are tough to source new ones. Mine were similar. I removed them, and the mounting studs were broken. I was able to fix them using new bolts washers and JB weld. Picture of what I am talking about:

Thank you - will definitely be on the lookout for Roger Hanley! Does he post on BC?

emac - nice job on the bumper covers...we're going to try your strategy to do the same this Spring. That picture helps a lot; any other curveballs on that project that you encountered?

Roger is a regular poster on BC and recently completed a restoration.
