Recaro sprung hinge covers?

Post by wattsmonkey »

Hi fellas,

These seats are, apparently, from an early S1. I've never seen the inner hinge with the spring in the pictures - zero rattles! I'm missing the cover for the r/h seat - has anyone seen this type before? no labels extant, leather very dry and recoloured from original pearl beige (sorry, Don!). Other seat in pieces and smells of cat wee - Spanish cat wee sent all the way to the UK in a van.

Same seats that I had recovered in black leather a while ago.
They are ALWAYS rustier than you thought!!!!!!

The ones with the fantastic corduroy faces, weren't they from an E12 originally?

Did they have the sprung hinges though?

Just as an update on this, in case anyone else has these seats: they are identical to non-sprung seats in the backrest with the exception of one very important detail: the hinge pin is welded on to the back, rather than screwed in!

The point of this being that a return to non-sprung hinges with readily-available plastics is made a lot more difficult.

More useless info in the next instalment of "Rob's Recaros"

Seats are Recarro from a pre 82 six series identified by the 7 pleats sewn into the upholstery. Later seats have 5 pleats This is what I have in my 81 635 Euro which was all original when I bought it
81 Euro 635 M90 with motronic. Currently under a complete nut and bolt restoration. Pictures at

Thanks Bert, that's right - definitely Series 1, pre '82. It's the sprung hinges that surprised me - my '81 seats (a different set, as retrofitted to my '84 car) have the "normal" hinges.
