Remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor 80 years ago

Post by GRNSHRK »

Wow, 80 years since the attack on Pearl Harbor that put USA into WWII

Thought I'd throw out a word of thanks to those that lost their lives on that day, along with the survivors =D>

And I also thought I'd post a pic I took a few years ago at Moffett Field in Mountain View here in CA, somewhat fitting as it was adjacent to a WWII era airplane :-"

I'm not sure what model that plane is, perhaps some of you airplane buffs can enlighten us [-o<

Cool picture Bobbo!
Very nice of you to commemorate these brave men.

By looking at the tail and engines, I would guess this is a Lockheed.

Bobbo,
I too think of December 7th every year, 1941 was 5 years before my time. Pearl Harbor, and especially the Arizona and Utah are very stark reminders.

I think it might be proper to add some information. That is a great photo of your car with the Lockheed P-3 Orion in the background. However, your history chronology is not correct.

During WW2, the navy used the PBY-5 Catalina. That was an amphibious plane produced between 1936 and 1945.

In 1945, the Lockheed P-2 Neptune was introduced. That Anti-Submarine Warfare plane was used by the U.S. Navy until the 1960s.

The photo shown is a P-2V7. I was an aircrewman in the P-2V5 and the P-2V7 during my time in the Navy. It had two 3350 cubic inch reciprocating propeller engines and two Westinghouse J-34 Jet engines. During long flights, it was common to have both recips and one jet on-line. The jets would be alternated between the port and starboard periodically to keep the fuel even between the wing tanks. I recall one aircraft control radio operator saying "Seven Victor 221, state your status". The pilot replied "We have two turning, and one burning". The controller said, "Do you want to declare an emergency?".

The P-3 Orion was used by the Navy beginning in the 1960s. It was adapted from the Electra airliner that had problems with a harmonic vibration causing the engine mounts to disintegrate. The public became afraid of these because of crashes. The navy acquired these aircraft after the problem was identified and fixed. I flew from Moffett Field to Barber's Point in Hawaii in one of these.

Wow. Piston and jet engines on the same plane. Fascinating. Read that they converted the jet engines to run on aviation gas as well. Thanks for sharing!

It was a very cowardly attack by the Japanese. But I think their actions in forcing the USA to enter WW2 eventually enabled victory by the Allies. We couldn't have prevailed without America's great industrial output and armed forces.

Definitely true, without the Americans, we were all speaking German right now in our countries I assume. I hope this history will not repeat itself.

When I was in the Navy Reserves in CA I drilled at Moffet, in the old dirigible hangers. The Electra, between the issue with gearbox failure causing wings to come off and the dawn of the jet age, never was really successful as a passenger plane and successor to the Connie and Super Connie.

As an interesting side note, the guy who sold me his 635 was a former P-3 pilot.

Great stuff Jim =D>

Here's a couple more shots, both with Hanger One in view, which is now just a skeleton, stripped down to the frame, to remove all of the asbestos [-X

I had the good fortune of being able to store the green shark there for 11 months while doing an addition on the house, thanks to Pat (ONEBADM) \:D/

If you ever head down 101 then cross over on 46 to the 5 on way to So Cal take a pit stop to the Wings & Warbirds museum just outside Paso Robles off just highway 46. We went with PSF few years ago. Well worth the trip but leave your self an hour or two to view everything. Including some vintage cars n motorcycles and WWI & WW2 real memorabilia .
Awesome place.

They have a car show every fall n line up cars amongst warbirds for the day. Great venue. I parked next toF14

Agreed on the museum. My wife and I stopped by during our visit to Paso Robles this summer (Hi Craig and Pam!). While touring the Woodland Auto Display portion we even ran into the founder, Richard "Dick" Woodland. I see the annual Warbirds Wings & Wheels event is coming May 7th, 2022 - that sounds like a fun event. Wish we could attend.
