Removing seat when motor is inoperable

Post by j24sailorboy »

My 88 M6’s seat motors work fine except for the drivers fore/aft motor. Seat is fully aft but It only clicks when operating the switch buttons. I’ve tried lifting and coaxing the seat while twiddling the buttons to no avail. A close inspection of my passenger seats motor show that a square drive bit nicely turns the motor and solves the problem of getting to all 4 seat bolts. However, the drivers motor has some little attachment that covers the shaft of the motor, which I suspect is to do with the memory function. I’ve given this a tug with pliers but it isn’t readily popping off to allow access to the square drive part of the motor shaft.
Second pic is the normal passenger side with square drive, first pic is the drivers side with the offending accessory.
Any ideas? Before I brutalize it further w vice grips?

The seat can be moved forward by pushing the seat base forward. Get into the rear seat, place your feet on the base and push until you clear the seat rail bolts. No damage of the gears will occur. Remember to remove the front rail bolts first or you'll block access with the seat being in the forward position.

How hard do you have to push the base to get it moving?
I put my whole body effort into pushing it forward, but it wouldn't budge.

Unfortunately the little square drive piece on the front motor is damaged and won't allow the square drive socket to stay engaged.

If you can get a screw extractor into the square drive you can fit a small socket over the other end of the extractor if I understand the problem.
