Friends got a problem. Autobox goes into forward gears no problem. Will not go into reverse!
Standard 4 speed switchable.
Not heard of this before.
Any ideas??

I know you know far more than me about these cars, but is it a question of the dash indicating that reverse is selected but there simply being no drive?

It’s an internal failure.
Most often they fail by losing the “A” clutch pack, which is all the forward gears but not reverse.
Reverse doesn’t run through the A pack.
It’s been a while, but I believe reverse runs through a D pack, or D drum.
Either way, it’s internal and needs a rebuild, replacement or, imo the best option, a 5 speed swap.
