So I did my weekly warm up before putting my Garage Queen to bed for the winter. If the fan turns on a dead cold winter morning, does that mean the thermostatic clutch has failed? I don't want to try the newspaper test as I have an original red fan.

Song’s AC documention is excellent, I referenced it when I redid my AC this summer.
There are others out there with useful info too, on E24 sites and also E28 sites.
I also got the Hack Mechanic AC book on Amazon, it’s very good too.
IMO, if you’re going to DIY redo AC, it makes sense to do it completely (because the parts are pretty inexpensive, the $$ is in the labor).
That means new compressor (I used a genuine Sanden 508, not a clone), New parallel flow condensor (I found 16x20 is the biggest that would fit in my Series 2 E24, and for that you have to use the 90 degree drop link fittings), new hoses (easy to make or have made at a shop), new expansion valve, remove and thoroughly flush the evaporator, new receiver/drier, new modern Spal high flow condenser fan.
So, basically everything is brand new except the evaporator, which is thoroughly cleaned and flushed.
My parts cost were roughly $250 compressor, $40 bracket, $100 PF condenser, $120 hoses, $150 Spal fan, $35 expansion valve, $50 receiver drier.
When done, I was blowing 40 degrees at the vents on an 86 degree summer day on R134.

Many thanks on the summary of an A/C refresh. I've been accumulating the parts. The only original Sanden 508 seems to be from Summit Racing unless there are other vendors out there.
My previous post was about my thermostatic fan and its behavior when cold. Any ideas there before I play parts bingo?

I think others sell the 508, but I did get mine from Summit.
Are you talking about the belt driven engine fan? If so, yes, it has a clutch, but it’s always going to be to be spinning when the engine is running. Even when it’s cold it doesn’t sit stationary when the engine is running because there is always some drag/friction in the clutch.

I wonder if anyone tried to make a dashboard out of wood or aluminum via CNC?

Wrenching season has begun. So far, it been about $1k to replace a badly rotted muffler with an ok used Ansa rear muffler. As we don't have emissions tests on cars this old, and the cat was rattling, they installed a 1 into 2 pipe.
Here's the program this summer:
1. Fix broken bolt in the right rear A arm that hold the Pittman arm in place. If I can't remove the busted piece, I have a used A arm to swap into place from Ralph.
2. Refresh A/C system. I'm going to get a Sanden compressor rather than rebuilding the old unit. Besides the leaking seal which dumped compressor oil on my driveway, I'm sure there's wear and tear. I've got a new dryer and cross flow condensor. Also on the shopping list are 2 Spal pusher fans. Which is the right one to buy?
3. New mounting bushings on the alternator. I hope I don't break any of the old bolts.
4. One of my speaker enclosures has sun damage and it's twisted. I'm told strong glue and lots of clamps. I think PU glue can do it.

I also have an E32 which needs lots of love too.

It's called "mission creep". You set out to replace the roundel on the boot lid and end up rebuilding the entire rear suspension just because you were there already.

What's the part number for the Spal pusher fan used with a 16x20 cross flow condensor?

The seal around the cable entrance in the scuttle is drying out and I want to reseal it. What's the best stuff to use?

Rewrapping the electrical cable bundle from the fuse box to the cabin with Tesa 51036 tape. The original wrapping was a non-sticky cotton cloth that was falling apart. So about 10' of 25mm tape and a hook tool is needed to do the job. This tape is fuzzy on the outside and slightly sticky inside. Think a bit more than a Post-It and less than electrical tape. Notice that once the bundle passes into the cowl or scuttle, a vinyl, water resistant tape wrap it used so I didn't disturb it. I will post pics later.

Next time I need to wrap cables in a non-wet location, I would double up the tape by folding it sticky side to sticky side. That way there would be no adhesive on the increasingly fragile wire insulation.
